New Years is that it is just another day
The funny thing about New Years is that it is just another day. But then again even the concept of ‘day’ can be funny if you like at it in the right light (pun intended). When you look at the world around you the concept is easy to see; when the sun is up its day time, when it’s down its night. But when you look at it from the perspective of the world things become a little more murky. From the world’s view point, the sun is never down, it’s always night, and it’s always day. Even seasons begin to lose definition; it’s always winter, summer, spring, and fall. It’s as if time is unending and breaks in it are artificial.
If the concept sounds familiar it’s because I didn’t make it up. The thought that time is one continuous stream, and the breaks in it of minutes, seconds, hours, days, and years are artificial, is a thought that has been played with many times, with more skill, and more success by people before me.
So why bring it up now? I bring it up because I think it bears remembering. Everyone has their own traditions for welcoming a New Year, but one many of us seem to share in common is the tradition of making a New Years Resolution. This is usually a promise that we make to ourselves to turn our lives around in the New Year. The New Year symbolizes a fresh start, a chance to break bad habits and create good ones. Its as if by starting on such a symbolic date we give ourselves a greater chance for success.
We convince ourselves that we don’t have a habit of giving in to our bad habits in the New Year. The New Year is a blank slate, ready to have us make our marks upon it. If we start off with good marks we believe we can build the momentum to have a great year. We believe that we can leave the past behind us and focus on the new patterns we are building for ourselves.
And this is why I remind myself that the New Year is just another day. Reminding myself provides two benefits. One, it reminds me that the power of the New Year is inherent in every day; any time I want to make a change I can do it now, no need to wait. Two, it reminds me that my past is not so far behind me. It will take true effort and dedication to make my new patterns the habit of my life.
However you welcomed the New Year this year, I wish you a fruitful one. Whatever Resolution you set for yourself, I wish you success at reaching your goal. If you stumble and fail to obtain it, I hope you’ll remember that the New Year is just another day, and there’s no reason to wait to commit yourself to your Resolution again
