Let history be our guide
Last month I wrote about running into some art vendors at a local mall who were going through some rough spells because of the economic downturn. I wrote and shared this story because their struggle resonated with me. Based on the feedback that I have received, it is safe to say that is a sentiment that resonates with many of us. It is also safe to say, we all struggle the same one time or the other.
The recent problems that plague our economy have affected some of us more directly than others, but the fear is universal. We have watched former titans brought down to their knees by a twist of faith. We have watched our neighbors brought down to despair. We have seen the reckless and the prudent brought down by forces outside of their control. We have been reminded, forcibly, that nothing today is promised for tomorrow, and that the future of our neighbors, also affect our future, even when that neighbor is on the other side of the world.
So in the midst of this entire mess where do we find the strength to face tomorrow? To build, borrow and invest when the very institutions that we place our faith and trust in can fail at any time? For me, I find strength in history. One might say, history repeats its self; and that’s true, as far back as I can remember, they are of stories of hard times. The fact that we have good times to mourn is proof of its passing, and if history is any guide this too shall pass.
When it does, it would be wise for us to take another lesson from history, and as a people, not fall prey to the same vices that laid the foundation for the current economic calamity.
